108 volunteers participated on Saturday, 103 on Sunday, and 48 on Monday. All told, over this weekend, 284 volunteer days and 2,200 hours of volunteer stewardship were generated on our local National Forest lands. Starting at the upper trailhead (located at the very end of Spruce Creek Road) and continuing to lower Mohawk Lake, these volunteers performed the critical and challenging work of restoring and rerouting 1.5 miles of this popular trail. They built 121 steps, 23 chiseled rock steps, 10 cairns, 28 waterbars, 37 knicks, a 20 ft. log bridge, a 10 ft. 2-tier rock wall, a 5 ft. mono wall, a 10 ft. mono wall, a 30 ft. turnpike, 60 ft. stepping stones, and closed 2,525 feet of social trails. In doing so, they helped create a single, safe, sustainable, habitat-friendly route to Mohawk Lakes. A special thanks goes out to VOC for hosting this, and several other trail projects and training sessions this summer in Summit County. Through their partnerships with FDRD and other local public lands agencies, much needed trail maintenance was accomplished on local trails that otherwise would not have been completed.

RESULTS FOR Sat..8/12/2006... Wildfire Fuels Reduction
Arrance, Austin; Arrance, Susan; Bitler, Joel; Bitler, Mern; Cox, Jim; Cox, Maggie; Craven, Currie; Denham, Lin; Ebbert, Cindy; Fenner, Marilyn; Fox, Karen; Gibbs, Dan; Kish, Richard; Kopp, Janelle; Kopp, Phil; Maguire, Patti; Noble, Bob; Noble, Jeff; Raport, Vic; Raquet, Johanna; Robinson, Virgil; Rookey, Alison; Rookey, Michael; Rookey, Nolan; Steuer, Kurt; Van Howe, Kenny; VanVooren, Guff
These 26 volunteers and 1 Forest Service Representative generated nearly 120 hours of volunteer stewardship in the 2005 Ophir Mountain Fire area behind the High School. Using Pulaskis, McLeods, Spades, and lots of elbow grease, they created an alternating pattern of logs across one acre of the steepest section of the burned area. In doing so, these volunteers helped reduce the amount of erosion in this area, thus mitigating the potential negative impacts caused by erosion, including loss of soil in the habitat, water runoff that might cause flooding, and water quality problems that result from the sediments carried with this runoff into the watershed`s streams. These strategically placed logs will hold nutrient-rich soil in place, thus encouraging native plant species re-growth in this area, providing for a healthier forest ecosystem. While enjoying coffee and muffins before the start of the project, these volunteers were treated to an education segment by Patti Maguire, Summit County Wildfire Mitigation Officer. She shared information regarding the 2005 Ophir Fire, fuels reduction and fire mitigation collaborative efforts in Summit County, defensible space efforts around homes and other structures, and the history of fire - including its various uses and its role in a healthy forest ecosystem. FDRD applauds her tireless efforts to educate the public and help make Summit County a safer place to live and recreate! A special thanks goes out to our sponsors -City Market, Safeway, and The Coffee Cart at Breckenridge`s City Market - for providing us with our `trailgate` treats before and after the project; and the Summit County Wildfire Mitigation Program, for providing us with information that connects the importance of participating in these efforts to the health of our surrounding forest and community.
