Forest Stewards Program Overview

Friends of the Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) received 2008 funding from the National Forest Foundation (NFF), The Summit Foundation (TSF), Copper Mountain Resort (Copper), Vail Resorts, Colorado State Trails-GOCO Fund (GOCO), Alpine Bank, and the Towns of Frisco, Breckenridge, Silverthorne, and Dillon to further develop and implement an ongoing volunteer offering, called the Forest Stewards Program (the Program).

FDRD and the U.S. Forest Service are partners in this Program. Copper is the Founding Corporate Sponsor of the Program. Contributing partners include Friends of the Eagles Nest Wilderness (FENW), Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC), Summit County Open Space and Trails (SCOSAT), Keystone Science School (KSS), and Continental Divide Trail Alliance (CDTA). Adopt-a-Trail partners include Copper, Frisco, Summit County Off-Road Riders (SCORR), Our Future Summit, Summit Seniors, and Christy Sports.

In 2007, its second season (funded by the NFF, TSF, Copper, Frisco, and GOCO), on-the-ground training and implementation of the Program resulted in 7,767 volunteer hours (1,253 volunteer days), valued at $148,994.

Volunteer opportunities are available for people to participate in the Program's third season through the following initiatives. Please "Join in on the Fun" in the following ways:

  • Crew Leaders - lead crews in the maintenance of trails
  • Ranger Patrols - survey and provide education outreach to trail users and inventory noxious weeds
  • Outreach Educators - front desk support and trailhead host
  • Adopt-A-Trail Groups - adopt one trail - trail maintenance, ranger patrol, and trailhead host efforts
  • Youth Stewards - participate in various projects throughout the summer
  • Family Stewards - participate in ranger patrol or project efforts while enjoying a day in the forest with your family

Volunteers will commit to at least 4 days of stewardship from June through September plus required training days related to the specific initiative. Applications are due April 23. The first training session is scheduled for May 10 (returning Ranger Patrols will meet for a half-day on May 3). Each initiative will involve leadership training and education for the Forest Stewards.
