Forest Stewards Program Update

(FDRD’s Forest Stewards Program is funded by The Summit Foundation, National Forest Foundation, Copper Mountain Resort, Town of Frisco, Colorado State Parks-Trails Program-GOCO Fund, and FDRD members)

Forest Stewards Training – May 12 - A huge thanks goes out to FDRD’s Forest Stewards and Friends of the Eagles Nest Wilderness’s (FENW) Wilderness Volunteers, who kicked off their 2007 efforts of these on-going programs with their first training session.

These volunteers gained more background on the Dillon Ranger District, FDRD, FENW, and the programs’ various efforts.  As well, they were educated on TREAD Lightly, Leave No Trace, Wilderness, and Authority of the Resource principles.

74 volunteers will participate in trail maintenance, trail and trailhead patrol, campsite rehabilitation, invasive species identification, and service project support, in order to improve the quality of our natural resources and the quality of the visitors’ experiences on our Local National Forest lands.

FDRD is very excited to work with these amazing volunteers this summer.

A special thanks goes out to Blue Moose Restaurant, Subway Sandwiches, MiZuppa, Safeway and Beaver Run – for providing our volunteers with delicious treats and comfortable training facilities throughout the day.  And kudos goes out to the Summit Daily News, Krystal 93, and KSMT-The Mountain for helping us get the word out to our wonderful volunteers!

Throughout the month of June, these volunteers will also take part in Crew Leader training and Ranger Patrol mentor days – if you see them on the trails, be sure to thank them for their amazing efforts!

WHAT’S HAPPENED

FDRD Contract Position – FDRD is excited to announce a new member of our Leadership Team – FDRD’s Volunteer Coordinator, Troy Wineland!  Troy will oversee FDRD’s Service Project Season Program, including coordination of eight service projects and “on-demand” projects, compilation of the volunteer calendar, and participation in Forest Stewards Program efforts.

Troy’s past experience as a DRD staff person and FDRD Board Member & project coordinator will be sure to add great value to FDRD’s efforts.  FDRD is very fortunate to count Troy as a leader of our organization and we look forward to working with him in this new capacity.  Make sure to congratulate Troy next time you see him!

2007 Summer Volunteer Calendar – FDRD has compiled the 3rd Annual Summit County Volunteer Calendar, a collaborative effort featuring over 160 volunteer efforts of 38 organizations dedicated to natural resource management.  The calendar serves to inform community members of the many opportunities to support these organizations. We hope it is a useful resource as you determine ways to give back to Summit County by participating in the volunteer efforts of these wonderful organizations in our community.  Tape it to your fridge or copy it to a computer file for easy reference throughout the summer.  FDRD will also distribute this calendar at all our events throughout the summer.  Pick one up at our projects!

This summer, look for FDRD’s “Summit Stewardship - Volunteer Opportunities Abound” Monthly Column in the Summit Daily News.  These columns will feature 2 participating organizations and their upcoming events.  We hope this provides you with an opportunity to learn more about these organizations and ways to support them.

Thanks to all the participating organizations of the calendar.  We look forward to growing this effort with you!

And kudos to Linda Tatem, FDRD Calendar Project Coordinator, for her dedication and care in bringing this calendar to fruition - Bravo Linda!

Sunday, May 20 – Oro Grande Trail Maintenance - FDRD would like to thank SCORR and SCOSAT for partnering with us on the Oro Grande Trail maintenance day.  These 17 SCORR volunteers, along with 2 SCOSAT and 2 FDRD crew leaders, generated 74 hours of volunteer stewardship on this popular trail.  They performed trail maintenance on one mile of trail, including trail restoration on switchbacks, built water structures (including reinforced dips and knicks) and de-bermed parts of the trail, for erosion control efforts.  In doing so, these volunteers helped provide for a more sustainable trail for the enjoyment of Summit County’s locals and guests.  A special thanks to Joe Casselberry, FDRD Crew Leader, for grilling burgers and brats for this hungry crew – Delicious!
