Forest Stewards Program Update

FDRD’s Forest Stewards Program is funded by: The Summit Foundation, National Forest Foundation, Copper Mountain Resort, Town of Frisco, Colorado State Parks-Trails Program-GOCO Fund, and FDRD members.

First things first...PLEASE READ! – FDRD friend, volunteer, and freelance-writer extraordinaire Heather Gerhart wrote an AMAZING ARTICLE about our Forest Stewards program! PLEASE, if you have not read this article, take a few minutes to read it, share it with your friends and colleagues, and thank Heather for so eloquently conveying in words what it is that we ALL are accomplishing for our National Forest lands! THANK YOU Heather !

June 9 - Crew Leader Training – FDRD thanks our Crew Leaders for participating in our training effort on the Meadow Creek Trail. 11 volunteers and 2 Forest Service staff generated 83 hours of volunteer stewardship on our local National Forest lands, valued at $1,466. We prepared a trail condition survey and improved our skills on various erosion control structures and other trail maintenance efforts.

To learn how to get involved in Crew Leading efforts, please contact Guff Van Vooren at 970-389-6058 or guffvanvooren@msn.com.

FDRD Crew Leaders train on the Meadow Creek Trail. These great folks will lead trail maintenance efforts throughout the Dillon Ranger District this summer. Join their crews for a guaranteed GREAT time on the trail!

June 24 - Weed ID and GPS Training – A huge thanks goes out to our newly trained “Weed Warriors” and “GPS Pros” for participating in FDRD’s Noxious Weed ID and GPS Training. These Ranger Patrols, Outreach Educators, and Family Stewards learned about Summit’s noxious weeds and how to properly identify them. In addition, they learned how to use a GPS unit, to accurately identify the location of noxious weeds and other trail features in their trail patrol efforts. Jen Mantle, Summit County Weed Program, and John Taylor, Colorado State Weed Advisory Committee, provided their Weed expertise and experience while Troy Wineland, FDRD’s Volunteer Coordinator, provided his GPS expertise and experience to our volunteers. Armed with weed books, pictures, flyers, and GPS units, these volunteers are sure to improve the quality of the program with their new-found knowledge and skills!

Stewards practice their newly acquired noxious weed ID and GPS unit skills to properly identify and GPS the location of this weed. Musk, Canada, or Native Thistle?.... They all determined, in fact, that this weed, located in a planter box at Northing 13S0407684 – Easting 4387938 (Dillon Ranger Station), was a native thistle - phew!
