WHAT’S HAPPENED
Invasive Species / Weed Pull Service Project - July 14th –
Twenty-one volunteers generated 105 hours (valued at approximately $2,000) of volunteer stewardship for our National Forest lands! They pulled, yanked,
and dug-up 9 bags of noxious weeds (including: false chamomile, mullien, and musk thistle) around the Dillon Ranger District office and 21 bags at Columbine Landing.
‘Thank you’ to Jen Mantle, Assistant Coordinator for the Summit County Weed Program, for her informative educational segment and assistance with weed identification!
Special thanks goes out to our sponsors for this event - City Market, New Belgium Brewery, Rocky Mountain Coffee Roasters and Safeway – for providing us with food
and beverages at the beginning and end of the day! Forest Stewards Program –
FDRD’s Forest Stewards Program is funded by: The Summit Foundation, National Forest Foundation, Copper Mountain Resort, Town of Frisco, Colorado
State Parks-Trails Program-GOCO Fund, and FDRD members. Adopt-A-Trail Projects – The Crew Leaders and Adopt-A-Trail Groups had a very fun and busy month. Thank you to the 113 volunteers and crew leaders for helping to improve the trails we all love to recreate on - please consider joining these groups on their next trail day (see What’s Happening Section for details). All told, the 6 Adopt-A-Trail projects (outlined below) combined for 116 total volunteers who produced 703 hours of stewardship valued at more than $13,100 ! Their efforts included: trail closure, restoration, and rehabilitation; building water structures (including knicks, dips, and water bars); transplanting native vegetation; and having a GREAT TIME on our local National Forest lands! · Copper Mountain Resort - Wheeler Lakes Trail - July 13th Adopt-A-Trail Project

Tree-Clearing Projects – Kurt Steuer, an FDRD Crew Leader and recently trained and certified as a sawyer, led two tree-clearing projects on the Gore Range Trail (North Willow to Salmon Lake). 12 volunteers generated 101 hours of volunteer stewardship, valued at $1,896. They cleared 81 trees in an effort to re-open this area to the many users of this popular trail. With last month’s wind event in the Gore Range, the DRD staff and many volunteers have been out in full force. FDRD sends HUGE kudos to everyone involved in this most important effort! If you are interested in future tree-clearing efforts, please email Troy Wineland or call him at (970)485-2961. Youth Stewards – Keystone Science School (KSS) Day Camp Weed Pull

VOC / FDRD Gore Range Trail Project (July 28 - 29) – While the dust has not settled (impacts are still being calculated and photos are still being catalogued), one thing is for sure – the VOC-FDRD Gore Range Project was a smashing success! A plethora of volunteers had a safe and FUN weekend – and felt a real sense of accomplishment as they walked out of the trail Sunday afternoon, admiring their recently completed craft work on the trail. FDRD sends out a round of applause to these volunteers for their efforts and would like to thank VOC for another great partner project! We will provide a full project report in our September newsletter – stay tuned! A Day in the Life of a Forest Steward – Each month in the Summit Daily News, FDRD features one volunteer participating in the Program’s 6 initiatives. In July, Jen Schenk and Copper Mountain’s Adopt-A-Trail effort on the Wheeler Lakes Trail was shared with the community. Visit this link to view the full article.
