Hello Friends of FDRD!

Thanks to your support, FDRD had a very fun and successful summer of 2005.  We had a great time meeting new friends and spending these days with you.  We doubled our volunteer effort from last summer and our membership has grown to just over 50!

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 15, Make a Difference Day – it’s a day of volunteerism for the entire Summit County community and is always lots of fun!

As we head into the fall season, we will continue to circulate the e-newsletter, to keep in touch with you.  To that end, we are adding a new section, “District Happenings”, which includes land management and other issues that the Dillon Ranger District (DRD) is currently addressing.  We hope this helps inform you of the “happenings” at DRD and gives you an opportunity to participate in these processes, if you so desire.

If you have any feedback, suggestions, and ways to improve this newsletter, please share them with me.  ENJOY!!

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Saturday, October 15, 7th Annual Make A Difference Day (MDDAY) – MDDAY is a national day of giving back hosted locally by Summit Prevention Alliance each October. Over 400 volunteers mobilize to provide work at over 30 sites in Summit County. Volunteer service ranges from building and maintaining trails, to painting a building, to cleaning computers and classrooms. MDDAY is a great opportunity to be active in our community and to meet new people.

Volunteers will meet at 8 AM at the Summit Stage bus barns near the County Commons. MDDAY provides a light breakfast at the beginning of the day and a BBQ at the end of the day.

FDRD hopes to host two project sites on this day – Windy Point Fence Reconstruction and Iron Springs Barbed Wire Removal.

For more information and to pre-register online, visit www.summitpreventionalliance.org.  The deadline for pre-registration is Oct. 13.  You can also register on the 15th.

We hope all of our wonderful FDRD supporters are able to join in on this countywide day of volunteerism.

MMDAY Site Crew Leader – We need 3 more crew leaders to assist Lin Dehnam, DRD Crew Leader, at the Windy Point Buck and Rail Fence.  You will lead a crew of 6-ish on a section of the fence, under Lin's direction.  We will meet with her the week before for a 30 minutes briefing.  Please contact Guff Van Vooren at 970-389-6058 or guffvanvooren@msn.com if you would like to join us in leading this effort.

FDRD Volunteers Celebrate The Fun Summer of Successful Service Projects

Saturday, September 10 – Sapphire Point Trail Restoration and Volunteer Celebration – What a grand finale to FDRD’s 2005 Summer Service Projects!  A big thanks goes out to our volunteers who joined in on the fun at our Trail Restoration Day.  These 25 volunteers and 3 Forest Service personnel generated 63 hours of volunteer stewardship for our National Forest lands.  They took down all the illegal structures at Sapphire Point, providing a safer and more natural experience for the users of this popular trail.

Following the service project, FDRD hosted a Volunteer Celebration Picnic, celebrating the 126 volunteers who generated 500 hours of stewardship during FDRD’s 2005 summer season.  The following volunteers were recognized as FDRD Volunteers of the Year - Maggie Cox (Super Friend), Kenny Van Howe (Super Service Project Volunteer), and Marilyn Fenner (Super Service Project Food Solicitor).

A special thanks goes out to our sponsors – Backcountry Brewery, City Market, Safeway, Steaming Bean, Keystone Resort, and Wilderness Sports – for providing us with the great food spread and the “out”door prize giveaway!  Remember to support our sponsors on your next gear, food and beverage runs!

DISTRICT HAPPENINGS

Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST) The vision for the CDNST is a 3,100-mile primitive and challenging backcountry trail from Canada to Mexico along the backbone of America. In order to better meet the nature and purpose of the CDNST, DRD is proposing the relocation of two 5 mile segments, near the town of Montezuma, off of primitive roads open to motorized use.  Although the official comment period ended August 20, 2005, you can contact Ken Waugh at 970-262-3446 for more information, questions, or comments.

Green Mountain Reservoir – To preserve the peaceful and natural setting of this popular local recreation destination for multi-users, new rules are proposed for 2006 and beyond.  DRD is accepting comments on these proposed rules through November 15, 2005.  To review a brochure outlining these rules, visit: http://www.dillonrangerdistrict.org/grn_mtn_res_prop_rules.pdf or you can request that one be mailed to you.  To comment on these rules, send email to: comments-rocky-mountain-white-river-dillon@fs.fed.us.
